Accessibility
Everyone belongs in the story of these islands
The Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation is committed to making the Center — and this website — welcoming and usable for everyone, regardless of ability.
Our commitment
Accessibility is part of our mission. The history and living environment of the Florida Keys belong to everyone, and we work to remove barriers — physical, programmatic, and digital — so that every visitor can take part. This statement describes what we do today and how to tell us when something isn't working.
At the Center
- The museum entrance, galleries, and restrooms are accessible, and the exhibit floor is on a single level.
- The Center is located on the grounds of the Islander Resort, with accessible parking near the entrance.
- Seating is available throughout the galleries and theater, and staff and volunteers are glad to assist visitors who need help getting around.
- Service animals are welcome throughout the Center, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Because our building is inside a resort property, we ask visitors with specific access needs to call ahead at (305) 922-2237 so we can make your visit as smooth as possible.
In our programs
We aim to make programs, camps, and events accessible to children and adults of all abilities. If you or a family member needs an accommodation to take part — large-print materials, seating, a quiet space, or something else — tell us when you register or email info@keysdiscovery.com. There is no charge for reasonable accommodations, and requests made in advance give us the best chance to prepare well.
Our participation in the Museums for All program reflects the same commitment: reduced admission for families receiving food assistance benefits, so cost is not a barrier to visiting.
On this website
We want this website to be usable by everyone, including visitors who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or other assistive technology. Our goal is to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. In practice, that means we:
- Provide text alternatives (alt text) for meaningful images;
- Keep strong color contrast between text and background;
- Build pages that work with keyboard navigation and screen readers, with visible focus indicators;
- Use clear headings and descriptive link text so pages can be skimmed and understood;
- Design pages to work on phones, tablets, and desktop screens.
Some materials we present — particularly historic photographs and archival documents — are shared as we received them, and may not always be fully described or transcribed. We add descriptions over time as our digital archives grow.
Tell us when something doesn't work
We can't fix what we don't know about. If any part of this website or any visit, program, or event presents a barrier for you, please tell us:
- Email info@keysdiscovery.com
- Call (305) 922-2237
- Write to P.O. Box 1124, Islamorada, FL 33036
Please describe the page or area where you ran into difficulty and how we can reach you. We take accessibility reports seriously, respond promptly, and use them to guide fixes.
Ongoing effort
Accessibility is ongoing work, not a finished project. We review new exhibits, programs, and website features as they are added, and we train staff and volunteers to assist visitors of all abilities. This statement will be updated as our practices improve.
