Privacy policy
Your information and recognition preferences
The Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation respects the privacy of visitors, members, donors, and community partners. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Who we are
The Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center at 82100 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, Florida. This policy applies to information collected through our website, at the Center, and in the course of our programs, events, membership, and fundraising.
Questions about this policy may be directed to info@keysdiscovery.com or (305) 922-2237, or by mail at P.O. Box 1124, Islamorada, FL 33036.
Information we collect
We collect only the information you choose to share with us:
- Contact information — such as your name, email address, mailing address, and phone number, when you join as a member, make a contribution, sign up for a program or event, submit an inquiry, or apply to volunteer or work with us.
- Membership and giving records — your membership level, contribution history, and recognition preferences, which we keep to serve you and acknowledge your support.
- Payment details — payments are currently arranged by phone, mail, or in person. We do not collect card numbers through this website. When other payment methods are introduced, card details will be handled by the payment processor and never stored on our website.
- Basic website data — like most websites, our hosting provider may automatically log technical details such as browser type and pages visited. This information is used only to keep the site running and improve it, and is not used to identify individual visitors.
How we use information
We use the information you share to:
- Respond to your questions and requests;
- Maintain your membership, process contributions, and send acknowledgments and tax receipts;
- Communicate about exhibits, programs, events, and news you have asked to hear about;
- Recognize donors and members, in the way each person has chosen;
- Meet legal and accounting requirements, including nonprofit registration and tax filings.
What we never do
We do not sell, rent, trade, or share personal information with outside organizations for their own marketing. We do not send fundraising or promotional email on behalf of other groups.
Service providers
We use trusted providers to operate our website, membership records, and email. These providers process information only on our behalf — for example, to deliver our email or keep member records secure — and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. Florida public charity disclosure records are available from the Florida Division of Consumer Services as described in the footer of this site.
Member accounts
Member accounts on this website are protected by a password you choose. Member-area content is for members and their households. Please keep your password private and contact us if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission. Member accounts are reviewed and approved by staff before access is granted.
Children's privacy
Our exhibits and programs welcome children, but this website is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the website. If you believe a child has given us personal information online, contact us at info@keysdiscovery.com and we will delete it.
Email choices
Every email we send tells you how to stop receiving that kind of message. You can opt out of program and event updates at any time while still receiving essential communications, such as membership confirmations and donation receipts. To change your email preferences, contact info@keysdiscovery.com.
Donor privacy and recognition
We follow the donor privacy practices expected of nonprofit organizations: donor information is kept confidential, used only to process and acknowledge gifts, and never sold or shared.
Donors may ask to be listed anonymously, to limit how a gift is recognized, or to opt out of public recognition entirely — at the time of giving or at any point afterward — by contacting the Foundation. We honor those preferences in all listings, including the website, lobby recognition, and printed materials.
How long we keep information
We keep contact, membership, and giving records for as long as you are active with the Center and afterward as needed for acknowledgment, accounting, and legal purposes. Inquiry emails are kept only as long as they remain useful. You may ask us to remove your information at any time, subject to record-keeping requirements that apply to nonprofit organizations.
Your choices
You may ask us at any time to confirm what information we hold about you, correct it, remove you from our mailing list, or update your recognition preferences. Email info@keysdiscovery.com or write to us at P.O. Box 1124, Islamorada, FL 33036, and we will respond promptly.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we will post the new version on this page. Material changes will be noted on this page so you always know what information we collect and how we use it.
