Tides and Times

The Florida Keys History and Discovery Center Newsletter, connecting our past with the future.
Through immersive exhibits, dynamic education programs, and community events, we conserve the stories, ecosystems, and identities that define this island chain — and ignite curiosity and pride in the next generation of historians, environmental stewards, and storytellers.

Curator's Corner
Dr. Heather Gonyeau · Curator of Collections and Public History
One of the most enjoyable parts of researching From Soil to Sea has been spending time with old Florida Keys cookbooks. At first glance, they may seem like simple collections of recipes, but the more time you spend with them, the more they begin to read like community histories.
Tucked between recipes for fish, fruit, casseroles, desserts, and cocktails are the names of local families, restaurants, churches, clubs, and businesses. Some dishes reflect ingredients that were once common in the Keys, while others show how tastes and traditions changed as new residents arrived and the islands became more connected to the mainland. There are recipes that feel completely familiar and others that leave you wondering exactly what was happening in that kitchen!
That has been one of the most interesting parts of the research. Every cookbook seems to lead to another story: a family recipe passed down for generations, a restaurant remembered by longtime residents, an ingredient that once played a much larger role in local life, or a dish tied to a particular moment in Keys history. Together, these details help tell a larger story about how people here grew food, caught seafood, cooked for their families, welcomed visitors, and gathered around the table.
We are bringing many of those stories together in From Soil to Sea, opening October 14. The exhibition will explore Florida Keys food culture through historic photographs, menus, recipes, artifacts, artwork, and stories from throughout the islands. The exhibit will also be accompanied by lectures, social media highlights, and other programs throughout the season.
One event I am especially looking forward to is our upcoming Tasting Night at the Islander Resort. The Islander's chef is creating a special menu for the evening inspired by the flavors and food traditions of the region. With food, music, and a Caribbean flair, it should be a fun night and a chance to experience some of the themes from the exhibit in a different way. Space is limited so make sure you reserve your spot at the table today!
There are plenty of ways to take part in From Soil to Sea. Join us for one of the programs, stop by to tour the exhibition, or sponsor a recipe and help support the project. We are excited to share what we have been uncovering and hope you will be part of it.
