When Is the Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys?

Peak season, the sweet spot, and hurricane-season deals — when to come to the Keys and what each season brings.

The Florida Keys are one of those rare places that feel like a reward just for showing up. Strung together by the iconic Overseas Highway, this 113-mile arc of coral islands offers something different depending on when you arrive. Leveraging the right timing can turn a good trip into a great one.

Peak Season: December Through April

The best time to visit the Florida Keys is often considered December through April, when the weather is sunny, warm, and drier, making it easier to enjoy beach time, snorkeling, boating, fishing, and scenic drives along the Overseas Highway. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s to low 80s°F — warm enough for the water, cool enough that you won’t melt between stops.

That said, the Florida Keys peak season brings peak prices and peak crowds. The Keys’ popularity in the winter months can mean surprisingly heavy traffic on the Overseas Highway, especially on three-day weekends. Book early, and build in buffer time for the drive.

The Sweet Spot: March Through May

For travelers with a little flexibility, March to May is the insider’s choice; you get fantastic weather right as the winter crowds start to head home. Spring highs sit comfortably in the low 80s°F, rainfall is minimal, and you can actually get a dinner reservation without planning three weeks out. You’ll also benefit from shoulder-season hotel rates.

This window is also prime time for festivals and events throughout the Keys, such as the Marathon Seafood Festival in March.

It’s also one of the best times to visit the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada. This gem of a museum brings the archipelago’s layered past to life through interactive exhibits, aquariums, fishing displays, and a rotating gallery featuring local artists. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., it’s a natural fit for a spring morning before an afternoon on the water.

Summer and Fall: Deals With an Asterisk

June 1 through November 30 marks the annual Atlantic hurricane season, with high hurricane risk in September and October. But for travelers willing to take a calculated risk on travel plans, you can score some incredible deals that make a Keys vacation much more affordable. Just remember to purchase travel insurance and stay flexible!

Summer also brings unique events like the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival in July, which is exactly as delightful as it sounds.

Enjoy Any Season

No matter when you visit, the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center is an ideal stop. Admission is just $15 for adults, with discounts for seniors, students, and free entry for military (with ID) and members. It’s the kind of place that makes the Keys feel less like a postcard and more like a place with real roots. Plan a visit today!
